The evolution of cities, technology and culture follow opportunities, and are not democratic. In this perspective democracy is a break on innovation,an attempt to make sure that most benefit. The growth of the road and roadside business along the road from Rome to Florence – this was not decided, but emerging opportunities seized upon.

In the current economy the mal-distribution of pain is excruciating. People shift from being a family house holder to being indigent, homeless, suicidal, and despairing. There is no safety net for way too many.

One wonders how the Christianity of love thy neighbor, welcome the stranger,  because part of a civilization  of success and failure, treating these as qualities resulting from character, when it is clear that opportunity and missing out are very randomly distributed.

It remains to be seen if we can respond to the economic and environmental challenges our crowded all too successful species has created.
