That predicament crystallized Tuesday when Rudy Giuliani, the mayor of New York during the attacks, condemned his fellow Republicans as being on the wrong side of “morality” and “obligation” for failing to support legislation to provide medical benefits for the first responders.
This must be seen as part of a lager struggle of who gets what in a declining economy, or at least en economy where wealth is still moving rapidly to the few who already have most of it. There will be many skirmishes like this, where each of us tends to be on one side or the other. The problem is, Both sides need to lose in order to restructure the economy. But each side is asking for its urrent slice of the pie or more, when the pie is already badly divided up.
